    Domain Guide
I bought my first domain in 2005 after years of being on freehosts like Geocities and HostUltra. I got it free with my hosting package at SimpleHost. When I got Tuesdays-Ashes.net I had no knowledge of domains whatsoever. If you are new to the domain world maybe this guide will help you be more prepared than I was.

    x. First figure out what you'd like your domain to be. Try stringing different words together, or try one of my site names. If the one you want is taken there are a number of things you can do. Try a different extension (.com, .net, .org, .us, .nu, etc), a different spelling, or add a dash. IE: be-different.nu, bediffer-ent.com, etc.

    x. Once you've figured out what you want your domain to be, and checked that it is available (DomainTools, GoDaddy) it's time to choose where you'd like to register your domain. I do not advise getting your domain free through a hosting package, or registering through your hosting provider because if you ever want to leave they'll own your domain, or for the latter they'll have control over it. If you ever want to switch hosting providers you will a) either not be able to take your domain with you, or b) it'll take a lot longer to get control over your domain. In my opinion the best place to register your domain is GoDaddy. They're nice, helpful, and I've never had any trouble with them. They're also very easy to use, even for a newbie. Also, if you have a domain expiring they send you about a million emails letting you know, in case you still want the domain. They also let you know months ahead of when the domain is expiring, so you cut down on the chance of losing a domain you want. Domains at GoDaddy cost about $8-9/yr. Netfirms is also a good registrar, but you can only register com, net, org, biz, and info domains, and they all cost $10/yr when they're not running a $5 promotion. Be aware that if you do get a domain at Netfirms for $5, it's only for the first year.

    x. Of course you're going to have to pay for your domain. GoDaddy accepts the most payment types, including PayPal which can be a quick and easy payment method. Make sure if you pay through PayPal that you have at least a few dollars more in your account than the cost of the doman. So if the domain is $9, make sure you have 10 or 11 dollars in your account, just to be safe.

I hope this domain guide has been helpful to you! If you have any questions, just let me know! Asking will help everyone, because the information I give you may end up here!
