What to Do if You've Got an Infestation
Once you got a bug problem, it can be hard to solve, especially if it is the ever annoying fruit fly, which this article is particularly useful for. This article contains a lot of the information from the "How to Keep Your Home Bug Free" article, because obviously they go hand in hand. The tools you use to keep your home bug free can also help get rid of them.

First isolate the problem. If you have an infestation there is likely something to be drawing them around the house, usually open food or dirty dishes. Use your nose, places where the bugs are munching will most likely smell because the food is rotting.

If the problem is in the sink, you're going to have to scrub, scrub, scrub. Turn the water on as hot as you can stand it, use lot's of soap, and take your time. Carefully inspect each plate for larva because they can be very hard to see. If you find one, scrape it off with a fork or knife. Throw whatever you using to clean the plates with away afterwards.

If the problem is food, like an open can of cat or dog food, check out the area around where the food was. Larva move around so they've probably migrated elsewhere.

Give the surrounding area a good scrub down, or vacuuming, and while you're at it vacuum the rest of the place too, because you don't know how far they've gotten.

From now on you're going to have to be very vigilant. Wash dishes immediately after using them and don't leave any bits of food in the sink or sitting around. Don't leave garbage sitting around for too long, and place and large amounts of food (chicken bones, old tv dinners) in a bag in the freezer until you can dispose of it outside your home. Vaccuum around the dinner table and any other place you've eaten.

Keep sweet things like fruit in containers or in the fridge.

    Ants:

Place anything sweet in airtight bags or plastic containers.

If you see an ant kill it and wash wherever it was walking and the surrounding area.

It can be very difficult to keep ants away during the summer if you have pets. You may have to move the pet food around several times, and set it someplace higher to keep the ants from tracking it.

Vacuum around the dinner table or any other place you eat often so there won't be any crubs left over.
