    Make Gym a Non-Requirement (Essay)
It seems like every school nowadays has a mandatory physical education class. Every student must participate whether they like it or not. Despite this many children and teens do not want to be involved in the program. Depending on the school, some children must attend every day. I am writing against the current program.

Schools today are overstepping their boundaries. The education system is there to teach English, mathematics, science, and the arts. There is no such thing as “physical education.” Schools should not be teaching kids how to play softball, basketball, or soccer. There are plenty of extracurricular activities and out-of-school sports teams that serve that purpose.

One of the main claims is that it teaches children team spirit and cooperation. In fact it does the opposite. Physical education pushes kids and teens further away from each other, as those who do not perform as well are looked down on and verbally abused. Sports teachers are just as bad as the kids they supervise, and even if they do try to stop the chaos the damage is done. Physical education is the easiest place for bullying to take place.

Another reason physical education is in place is because for some reason school systems believe it is their responsibility and right to keep their students fit. Does it really do any good? Is the “fat kid” any thinner or healthier at the end of the year due to these classes? Are they happier after they’ve spent the year being tormented in that class? It is not the schools right to force people to exercise if they do not want to. It is the parent and the child’s decision, not the school.

In conclusion it is my belief that physical education should no longer be a requirement. It does nothing to improve the situation of childhood obesity; it is a breeding ground for hatred, and only makes children dislike school more. Physical education hurts children with low self-esteem, which is unfortunately many of them. Make school what it used to be, a place to learn, not to work out. Please consider eliminating the current program.
